Oil Filled Transformers - High-power or high-voltage transformers are bathed in highly-refined mineral oil that is stable at high temperatures.  The oil serves as both a cooling medium to remove heat from the core and coil, and as part of the insulation system. Typically, transformers perform best at temperatures below 55 degrees C above the ambient temperature. Transformers that are large and used indoors must use a non-flammable transformer design liquid. Other less-flammable fluids such as canola oil may be used but all fire resistant fluids have some drawbacks in performance, cost, or toxicity compared with mineral oil.
